Based on the traditional Qigong and understanding of how the Qi works, Hua Tou developed "Five Animal Exercises", which imitate five types of animal movements.

The purpose of the Five Animal Qigong is to strengthen the muscle and bones, ensure proper circulation of Qi and blood, and prevent disease to ensure and increased lifespan for the practitioner.

The practices of Wu Qin Xi classifies into two categories:
1. External exercise of the torso and limbs to strengthen the body constitution. It can be classified into self-defence practice (Five Animal Boxing) and health preservation practice (Massage).
2. Mental exercises that imitate the spiritual expression of five animals represent the internal practice (Five Animal Dance).

Wu Qin Xi is practice ideal for middle aged and elderly practitioners because it incorporates the body, mind, Qi and spiritual practice.
Wu Qin Xi consists of five series of life nurturing exercises. The exercises are symetrical, simple, dynamic and static. Proper exercise practice can slow the aging process.
The first step in practicing the routines is to learn the movements correctly. The movements improve the function of muscles, joints, tendons, and ligaments keeping the body supple.

The second step involves the movements combined with breathing. The movements flow upwards, and the body stretches upwards while breathing in. Breathing out is done during lower limbs movements or by drawing them inward. Proper breathing coordination with movement promotes the flow of Qi and blod in the body and relaxation.

The third step is to imitate the external movement of an animal and include its spirit in practice.

The fourth step is to concentrate on the acupuncture points and internal organs. The practice clears the meridians blockages and promotes the Qi and blood flow in the body.
